Stolen shamelessly from social media, Toyota prices from 1987. Note how few cars were available with the two pedal option.

It would have been the swb in van spec though . The lwb was much too posh and expensive.

£22,510 in 1987 works out to about £62,199.27 today or over $76,000 USD in 2019. Amazing how much more car you can get for the money today. This is why I like progress.

In today's money, that Corolla 5 door hatch would be around £30,000....so at least cars are cheaper these days!

I don’t think inflatio n was quite that much...if I take the price of the three door hatch, convert to € at 0.787564 and use this calculator it gives me €23,796 which isn’t far off the actua l price now.

Not quite that much though.

IR£22,510 conv erts to €28,581 which per this calculator increases by 91.2% to €54,659. But yes, you get more things now. More safety and emissions gear in the case of the C elica. Not that you can actually buy one any more of course....

The issue might well be in the Euro conversion...I assumed too we were talking English rather than Irish pounds.

Funnily enough though...the same inflation disparity happens here in Oz. After all, I paid 14,000 dollars for a new Diahatsu Charade back in 1992 (in today’s money that’s equivalent to $26,500! )   . My mother bought a new Kia Picanto last year for 15,000 dollars.
